Creating my dog characters was relatively easy. They are a somewhat cartoony version of themselves, based on photos of actual dogs – look-alikes of actual island dogs. But I had to think real hard about the people playing a role in the book. Did I want to try and illustrate islanders as caricatures? I guess there is a fun aspect to see yourself depicted as a colourful character. My partner Steve plays a role in A Beary, Berry Good Day, and we’ve had a lot of fun with that (as did his colleagues). This would mean a lot of extra work as there are a LOT of islanders. Plus, it would require permission and more images to add to my already huge bank of 38 dogs.
After much consideration, I opted to go with fictional characters. This will allow me more freedom without having to worry about who gets included and if they look the part. Some characters may have a bit of resemblance to people that live on island but that will not be done on purpose. I am just drawing a variety of peeps, young and old, of all shapes and sizes, who will be generic dog owners. If one happens to remind you of yourself, go ahead and claim the role! The top image of this blog, a line drawing featuring Rue, who is sadly ignored by and angry crowd, is an example of the style I am working on for the humans.

I do want to disclose that as the artist/creator, I reserve the right to maybe sneak Steve in somewhere in the crowd… To be seen at a later date.
2025 has arrived. The deadline for dog photos has passed. I have been busy filling the book with all dogs available. And it is looking great! It is now time to start the colouring process.
Stay tuned for an update once my first illustration is done.
